Karyu causes no trouble?! Right, I can't even pretend I believe that. Oh, he is only warming up here, wait until I get to chapter 2009, that's when the shit hits the fan things get really lively ;D But for now it is chapter 2007 and MIRROR talk.

Same as before:

I will appreciate any help if there are any mistakes or something needs to be corrected ;)
Please do not repost it anywhere. I prefer to keep the translations to my own dark little corner and be responsible for my mistakes and the words I choose.

Previous chapters:

Q: You released a single [Squall] in March 2007 and an album [MIRROR] in April.

H: Yes, we finally released the records.

Q: Could you please tell us about some episodes that happened during the recording of your second album [MIRROR]?

K: [MIRROR] was the album that I decided I would judge myself by. I drew a line for myself. We worked really hard on [Coll:set] and I was troubled whether we would be able to  top it.

Q: What do you mean you “drew a line”?

K: I was not sure if there was the future for me as an artist or not. I had no self confidence…

Q: Are you a kind of a person who has violent mood swings, Karyu?

K: I don’t know.

Q: It would be probably for the best if you took things more lightly, but what kind of influence does your way of thinking have on the other band members?

K: I wonder… Do I cause you troubles?

Z: No, I don’t think so.

K: See? I cause no trouble.

Everyone: (laughs).

Q: Even though you like writing songs, you are not going to be satisfied unless you think it is really good?

K: Of course.

Q: But if your ideal image of what you want to achieve is too high, the worry of not being able to reach it might work against you and hold you back from achieving success…

K: But that way of thinking is probably something I will never get rid of.

Q: Even if you enjoyed writing a song unless it satisfies your ideal image of how it should be do you not want to release it?

K: No. That’s when I cause problems to the band, I have no scruples in extending the recording.

Q: Do you absolutely dislike releasing music unless it is perfect?

K: Absolutely so. The others often get mad at me because of it.

Q: Are there times when, for example, everyone waits for you to finish writing songs?

K: No, but it happens that I have doubts about a song and feel that it should be different and then I re-write it a day before we record it.

Q: In 2006 you didn’t release an album and I think that everything that happened must have been a source of inspiration for [MIRROR], but for you, Karyu, personally what kind of a work the album was?

K: If I am to put an ideal image I had for it simply, I wanted to write songs we could play at Wacken. I realized with clarity that I wanted D’espairsRay to become a band that could play at that kind of festivals… I think [MIRROR] turned out to be a really good album.

Q: I do not mean to categorize, but since we are talking  about it, maybe the concept of visual kei was no longer applicable to you, and the album showed that you wanted to be recognized as a rock band, not a visual kei band.

H: Well… I don’t think any of us thought about it, right? Are there people who consider us a visual kei band?

Q: There are.

H: Oh, really? (laughs)

K: Visual kei or not, I think we reached the point when we want to be seen as a rock band.

H: Yeah, well, but if we are asked if we are a visual kei band, I guess we are.

Q: Speaking of the long-awaited second album that reflected the scenery and fans' response at Wacken, you took your time releasing it (laughs).

K: That’s true.

Q: But I don’t mean to criticize you.

K: But those two years were really troubling.

Q: How did the work on [MIRROR] progress?

T: I feel that arranging songs took a really long time.

K: But in comparison to [Coll:set] it was fast.

T: Was it?

K: Yeah.

T: [MIRROR] was an album that topped [Coll:set] and broadened our music… With the release of [MIRROR] we spread our wings worldwide… So let’s toast to it!

H: Could you please stop saying nonsense?

Everyone: (laughs).

T: Talking is so difficult.

Z: When we released [Coll:set] all of us said all the time that it was the best album, so we understood that we had to top it and we had a lot of troubles, for example, choosing the songs for the album… We had troubles choosing a song for a single, [Squall] or [Trickster]. We were even divided over the album’s title song [MIRROR] whether to include it on the album or not.

K: Gradually the change in our musical direction became apparent.

Z: We exchanged different opinions and in the end it came down to us barely managing to finish the last two songs in time.

K: Yeah.

Z: Karyu was at home working on the songs while we were recording in a studio and once he finished them he sent them to us and we did the arrangements and sent him back over the internet. We just barely managed to finish the album in time.

Q: What kind of the change in the musical direction was it exactly?

Z: The difference was that there were certain places we didn’t want to go I suppose. We didn’t want to push too far and there was a difference in what detestable things we included on it.

H: Probably the limits we allowed for ourselves changed. There were a lot of conflicts among us about how far we were going to go and destroy what we had built so far, how more melodious we were going to make our songs.

K: I thought that there was no other way for us, but to expand. To surpass our previous album we had to bring something new and at the time of choosing a song for a single I said that [TRICKSTeR] would be better than [Squall].

Z: Yeah, Karyu kept insisting until the end that [TRICKSTeR] would be better as the single’s title song, but we chose [Squall].

K: And then the two of us were not… sure about [MIRROR] and we talked a lot about it, right?

Z: Yes.

Q: Did you have doubts if it was the right direction for you to take to become the band you wanted to be?

K: Yeah, we had a lot of doubts.

H: It is the same now.

Z: But didn’t [MIRROR] turn into such a great album exactly because we had all those conflicts? When I thought: “This is not right” about a song, I didn’t ignore it, but I thought how I would like to play it and searched for a solution. So as a result didn’t [MIRROR] become an album that made us grow?

K: I digress, but when we finished mastering I burst into tears.

H: Ah, that’s right. We were going to record the last song in the beginning of March, but three days before that Karyu brought another song and said that he wanted to have it recorded for the album too. We had to rush and change our schedule, but because we recorded that song [MIRROR] turned into such an awesome album.

Q: What song was it?

H: [Kaleidoscope]. And then when mastering was over Karyu just broke down (laughs).

K: Adding the last song was not easy, we had our schedule arranged and our management resisted the change and told us it was impossible. I thought of all those problems and that’s why I cried when we finished [Kaleidoscope].

Everyone: (laughs)

H: We managed to finish it with only one day delay (laughs).

Q: But what didn’t change about you was that you didn’t want to compromise. Many people aim for the top and try to succeed, but I think it is very important how they choose to go about it and improve their work.

H: That’s true.

Q: You toured a lot in Japan in 2007. Was it the first time you went to Yamaguchi?

K: Yes.

Q: I have never heard of any live houses in Yamaguchi.

K: There are lots of live houses in Yamaguchi (laughs). It is my home after all!

H: You were happy when Yamaguchi live was announced (laughs).

K: Yeah.

H: You got really excited!

Q: How did the live go?

K: I felt like everyone welcomed me back and I was really happy that I decided to become a musician.

Everyone: (laughs).

K: I was especially happy because of the time when it happened. I drew the line for myself for what I wanted to achieve during the tour and I thought that whatever response I get would be fine with me, but at the same time I was anxious about it.

H: You are such a pain~ (laughs).

K: But it was good. I decided that I am going to do my best from there on too.

Everyone: (laughs).

Q: Was the live in Yamaguchi that different from the lives everywhere else?

H: Yeah, even coming back for an encore was very difficult for the three of us, because the fans screamed “Karyu!” instead of “D’espairsRay”. And Tsukasa was the first to come out on the stage.

T: Yeah, I was like “Ah, hi guys”.

Everyone: (laughs).

K: It was the first time something like that happened! That’s why I was really glad that I decided to be a musician.

H: We also started playing cover songs around the time.

K: Somehow we began to have a lot of fun. During the lives we had a lot of fun just fooling around together.

T: We also began to improvise.

Q: What kind of improvisations were those?

H: We began to improvise during the previous “Spiral Staircase” tour.

Q: For example, what kind of improvisations?

H: That depended on a place and how a live went… I think 2007 was a year when [MIRROR] changed and transformed into something new. We changed the arrangements of the songs and then the songs changed further as we played them live more and more. We did a lot of different stuff and I feel strongly that the songs changed… That was the reason why we had no releases for a whole year! …I said something good!

Everyone: (laughs).

Q: You didn’t release an album in 2008 as well.

K: I wonder why. But we became more ambitious in 2008!

Z: We had a lot of singles in 2008, right? Also we toured in America and our major debut was decided… As far as I remember it wasn't like we couldn't release the album earlier.

K: Ah, that’s right, we had been working on it.

Reading about their creative process is fascinating. AS IF I COULD LOVE KARYU ANY MORE ♥

Thanks so much for these translations, they always make my day.

It must have been incredibly awkward. Somehow I have an image of Hizumi seeing Karyu bursting into tears and starting to edge away towards the door pretending to be all "I do not know this guy" 8D
Coll:set and Mirror are pretty even for me, different but equally awesome, and Redeemer is more of a roller coaster ride.
You're welcome ;)

OH MY GOD, Karyu ♥ I absolutely respect this man, he is so amazing.
And learning about their changes in music directions is really nice. I also recognized how shallow some of the fans (including me) are when they just judge, complain and judge (instead of just giving an opinion) while the artists have already given it full consideration.
This makes me love MIRROR and D'espairsRay even more now.

Btw, this made me laugh so hard
H: Yeah, even coming back for an encore was very difficult for the three of us, because the fans screamed “Karyu!” instead of “D’espairsRay”. And Tsukasa was the first to come out on the stage.

Didn't Tsukasa comment about this once in an episode of Maniac Station? XDDDDDDDDD

Poor Tsukasa, he tried to say something good and in the end Hizumi told him to shut up. And then there was Karyu-core at Yamaguchi >;D

Tsukasa cracks me up. And LOL at " the fans screamed “Karyu!” instead of “D’espairsRay”. And Tsukasa was the first to come out on the stage.

T: Yeah, I was like “Ah, hi guys”."
Apr. 30th, 2010 01:36 am (UTC)
Yeah, poor Tsukasa, that must have been a really tough situation to go on the stage ;D

Ah! I love reading about their creative process most, especially Karyu because he's the musical mastermind! I think he's very honest towards how he feels about creating songs and albums-- it's sometimes not even what I want to hear, but... I just love his honesty. They're all such hard workers. ♥

Thank you for translating!
Apr. 30th, 2010 01:39 am (UTC)
I don't think he is capable of lying about his music ♥, when he does not want to talk about something he just says so.
You're welcome ;)

dawww 2007 was all about Karyu ;D

its so interesting to find out how things turned out, and how hard they work on their music <3 seeing Karyu cry must be so awkward! I'd like to see them all fight over this kind of stuff in the studio >_>;;;

thank you for translating again :)
Apr. 30th, 2010 01:08 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it was all about Karyu, but we don't mind, right? ;)
It must have been an awkward scene when he cried, but I suppose it showed how hard they worked on the album and how emotionally invested he was (and I am sure is now too) in their music.
I wish I could see them argue too, but that's probably will never happen ;"D

You're welcome ;)
Apr. 30th, 2010 08:37 am (UTC)
I just went trhough all the previous chaps.....and I want to really thank you!
I learned a lot..really XD
and I just love them even more~
thank you and I'm waiting for the other translations:)
Apr. 30th, 2010 01:12 pm (UTC)
Then my plan worked ;D There is a lack of translations and interviews when it comes to D'espairsRay and I wish the fans would see more what kind of people they are, because these guys are so interesting and they deserve to be known better ;)
You're welcome ;)
